Music And Comedy Fundraiser For Lebanon United : 2007
4 th March 2007 - 7pm
The White Bear Theatre, 138 Kennington Park Road, SE11 4DJ
In 2006 SULIS produced the UK premiere of Laughter Under the Bombs by Sharif Abdunnur. This raised funds for displaced children and families in Beirut following the July - August conflict. Much work remains to be done so that communities affected by the conflict can get back on their feet.
‘an inspirational piece' – Alex, Beirut
‘thank you for this inspiring and moving reading' – Khaled Sarraf, Palestine .
SULIS are now proud to present Songs and Laughs for Lebanon – a night of music and comedy to raise funds for Lebanon United. Lebanon United is a fantastic group set up here in London to raise funds and awareness for the ongoing work needed in Lebanon . SULIS are proud to be contributing towards their work. Lebanon United will use the funds raised through this event to help reconstruct a healthcare clinic in Ghandourieh , Lebanon . The clinic is being rebuilt by International Medical Corps UK (Registered Charity No. 1093861).
The line up for the 4 th March is fun and varied! The schedule is subject to change.
We start the evening with singer/songwriter Bella Merlin and her own mix of folk and rock.
She will be followed by Bjorn Again star Robin Scott who comes fresh from touring with Lesley Garret to team up with talented soul singer Ellie Leah for our final night. Robin has performed all over the world with Bjorn Again as well as composing the No. 1 tour of RENTAGHOST THE MUSICAL in 2006. Ellie has also sung round the world including several NO.1 tours of the UK . Mixing Robin's own tracks with Ellie's interpretations of the classics this promises to be a special first half.
The second half presents a change of tone. We start by getting on our Blue Suede shoes with our very own Elvis impersonator, Scott Young . This leads into our comedy hour with Papy's Fun Club.
Pappy's Fun Club brings an hour of comedy, music and sketchy bits to the glamorous environs of Kennington. A packed bill of acts and characters jostle for attention, and things probably won't go to plan. With any luck, it'll still be funny. Nominated for Chortle Best Newcomer Award 2007, and with at least a small chance of actually winning it, Pappy's Fun Club might be worth a look. Pappy's Fun Club is a window into an exciting 'live' show, where anything can happen and usually doesn't. It has the childish exuberance and crumbling show structure of the Muppet Show, invaded by anarchic and surreal characters reminiscent of Vic Reeves' Big Night Out or The Mighty Boosh. There are no fades or audio 'blackouts', cut-scenes or locations. Instead it is a single, unbroken stream of free-form sketch and character comedy, using the structure of the Fun Club show to carry the events along and introduce fresh and exciting characters. www.pappysfunclub.co.uk
All tickets are £5 and all profits and donations will go to Lebanon United. Booking is advised!

Gaydar Diaries director presents premiere of newly penned play
SULIS are delighted to present Matt Ian Kelly's first outing of his new play Lightning Strikes. It goes a bit like this……..
Your 27 th birthday is just around the corner, you've played the gay game, the only way you know how. You've bought the t-shirt, the book, the hairstyle and some how it's still not right. And its driving you to …….. sleep. When Tom gets stressed Tom sleeps hard. Sleep takes him elsewhere.
Is he home at last?
Last year writer, actor and director Matt directed the hugely successful Gaydar Diaries. The show enjoyed sell-out runs at the Pleasance London and Edinburgh and is now getting ready to tour to Ireland in May 2007. Initially sponsored by Gaydar themselves, the show is a fast paced hour of songs and sketches about life on planet Gaydar.
‘Slick, imaginative direction of Matt Ian Kelly….. performed with versatility and gusto.' – Broadway Baby.
‘Brilliant, perceptive endlessly inventive and the most fun I have ever had without lying down.' – Rikki Beadle-Blair, Playwright / screenwriter ‘Metrosexuality' and ‘Stonewall'.
Prior to that Matt's first play However Do You Want Me had a great reception at the Hen and Chickens in 2004.
'A compact little gem of a play' –-RainbowNetwork.com.
'It's a refreshing, witty angle on the popular gay drama theme that offers much to delight in with its relaxed realism and keenly observed collection of characters.'—RainbowNetwork.com.
Lightning Strikes will be developed into a full run later in 2007. For more information on Matt click here.
